Bulletproof Coffee an Awesome Way to Start Your Day
- It can serve as a meal replacement, the fat in it makes you feel full for a long time.
- The coconut oil stimulates your metabolism.
- It boosts your focus.
- Improves brain function.
- Boosts energy.
What Is Bulletproof Coffee?
Bulletproof coffee is just coffee with good fats added to it like coconut oil, butter, MCT oil, or ghee. If you are on a keto diet, it is a great way to increase your fat consumption. If you make it per the recipe below it nets 24 grams of fat for the butter and 14 grams for the coconut oil, for a total of 38 grams of fat to start your day. At that rate it shouldn’t be hard to make your macros!
How do you make it?
The traditional method is:
- 1 cup of hot coffee
- 2 Tablespoons of butter
- 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil
Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend well.
My Misguided Method…
I started doing this back in 2010-11 and over time somehow forgot about the butter part, and just did one tablespoon of the coconut oil, my bad. But I would occasionally just do butter instead of the coconut oil, and that was a super treat. Butter is amazingly delicious in coffee, especially if it is Kerrygold grass-fed butter. So, it’s pretty hilarious I’ve been doing this wrong for years now!
I also never blended it because, well, I am sort of lazy that way and didn’t want to have to clean the big blender for one cup of coffee!
Rethinking My Misguided Method…
But I am seriously thinking that the texture you get from blending might be worth it. I am looking into buying a small Magic Bullet blender for this, so I don’t dirty up our big blender. My husband also suggested using a stick blender, which would probably be even less clean up (cuz that’s how I roll 😉)
So, since I don’t blend mine, I just have to give it a good stir before I take a drink since the coconut oil tends to float on the top, which can be kind of off-putting.
In my version, I also add 2 tablespoons of grass-fed gelatin to mine, (I use this kind here) which packs 16 grams of protein, so it truly serves as a meal replacement for me.
If you are going to try my route and add the gelatin powder, you do have to start with cooler to cold coffee, or the gelatin will clump and be kind of gross.
So what I do is make my bulletproof coffee after my first normal cup, letting the last inch in of coffee cool down so I can add the gelatin successfully. After the gelatin blooms, I add the hot coffee and the fats. Sometimes I also need to give it 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir it well or blend and enjoy!
Bulletproof Keto Coffee as It Should Be
So, it’s been a few days since I originally started to write this post and I decided to make my keto coffee as per the original recipe above with my gelatin addition. OMG, it was so good! And really not a huge mess as I had expected.
So, I start with a tall container and add my cold coffee, about an inch or two. Then I add my two tablespoons of gelatin, give it a stir and let it rest a few minutes so the gelatin will bloom.
This is how the gelatin looks once it has bloomed.
Then I add hot coffee to my container and add my two tablespoons of grass-fed butter and one tablespoon of coconut oil. Looks pretty gross, huh? Just wait….
Then I take my container to the sink and blend it thoroughly with a stick blender. I do this in the sink in case it spills, and some usually does spill out during blending. Then I can just wash it down.
And this is what I end up with! A thick, frothy, delicious cup of yum! It is so incredibly delicious I can’t believe I was hesitant to try it the way it should be done. I have never taken sugar or cream in my coffee, but this surely will satisfy your need for cream if that is how you take your coffee. If you need a little sweetness you can always add whatever keto sweetener like stevia to taste. You could also add cinnamon or cocoa powder. I think I will try that tomorrow!
With the amount of fat and protein in this cup it can easily serve as a meal replacement. When I have this I am not hungry for hours!
